Yes, there are elements of Millan’s philosophies that are good to follow such as ‘Exercise, Discipline, Affection – in that order’. His ‘calm assertive’ advice is also good. However what most behaviour & training professionals are against is the way that he uses aversive techniques to get what he wants from a dog, something he calls ‘calm submission’ but what we know is ranges from learned helplessness to hypoxia. There used to be many Nat Geo clips available on the web showing him using these inhumane techniques on dogs but they’ve now been lifted for some reason. If there were no other way to help these dogs, maybe the ends would justify the means, but this simply isn’t the case anymore. Millan needs to move with the rest of us, learn more about canine communication and accept that we all need to learn new ways from time to time. He seems unable or unwilling to do this. Very sad – for all of the dogs that I have to see and try to help as a professional behaviourist because their owners have tried to copy him and completely wrecked them..
